Probiotics May Suppress H. pylori Infection and Reduce Gastritis
A study published in November 2014 states that lactic acid bacteria suppress the viability of Helicobacter pylori and may decrease the occurrence of gastritis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that H. pyloriis the main cause of peptic ulcer disease and gastritis. The prevalence of H. pylori is estimated at 70% in developing countries and 30% to 40% in the U.S. and other industrialized countries.
Investigators evaluated ten strains of lactic acid bacteria for activity against H. pylori including inhibition of urease activity, inhibition of H. pyloribinding to human gastric cells, and suppression of interleukin (IL)-8 production caused by H. pylori.
